As part of the Peer to Peer: UK/HK digital festival launching on 11th November, artist Alex Chung Po Lun will be completing a social media residency with CFCCA from 14th November – 12th December. Alex will take over CFCCA’s Instagram each Saturday to share images from his project Hong Kong Spirit (2018-2020), a series of photographs which provide snapshots of everyday life in Hong Kong and explores the city’s changing identity over the last two years. Through this work, Alex seeks to capture the spirit and aspirations of Hong Kong and its people, mapping the dynamic sociocultural characteristics and urban topographies of a capitalist city in a period of transformation and resistance.
Alex has a keen interest in documenting the social and cultural scenes of Hong Kong society as well as the sentimentality of human spirit and emotions. He started to document the changes in Hong Kong society under decolonisation in the late 1990s, before turning to explorations of landscape photography in recent years. His photographs have been exhibited in Hong Kong and Spain, and his work The Quest was exhibited at the Hong Kong International Photography Festival in 2019.
Alex has been a Sociology lecturer at tertiary education level for 17 years. He completed a Postgraduate in Contemporary Photography at the HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education in 2018.
Alex Chung has been nominated for the residency by Bess Chan from the Hong Kong International Photo Festival, Hong Kong.
